You the only man that’s ever touched me. You’re the only one. I haven’t really touched anyone since.

With a lot of hype and critical acclaim surrounding the film Moonlight, there is sometimes a dread of wondering, is it really that good? The answer: Yes — it is that good, and even more than you might expect.

An impressive show of camaraderie runs through the entire cast. Each and every character uplifts the others — stepping in and wholeheartedly trusting the scene with subtle nuances: being present and re-acting in ways that feel lived-in and true.

This was an honest, deeply felt performance piece, and the ensemble work is as strong as it gets.

The cinematography unfolds like a symphony, capturing powerful, indelible moments that linger with you for weeks and even many months afterwards. Kudos and congratulations to the entire cast and crew, and special mention to Naomie Harris, who reportedly shot all her scenes in only three days — a remarkable achievement. I’m not sure what I expected Moonlight to be, but it left a profound presence and an unmistakable mark on cinema history.

It’s a film to be treasured, crafted by the very clever writer-director Barry Jenkins.
